The BoomCase Story:
The BoomCase was born in the Inner Sunset District of San Francisco, CA. Discouraged from always having to buy 12 “D” batteries for my BoomBox (which didn’t sound that great), I decided to build my own.
I have been building portable battery powered speaker systems since 1999. When it came time to make my own Boombox I had two goals: 1.) It had to have a built-in rechargeable battery. 2.) It had to sound great.
In the Summer of 2010 I decided to put pictures up of a new “BoomCase” on my artist website www.MrSiMo.com and My Etsy Store. Soon After ChipChick.com blogged about us. Engadget.com re-blogged ChipChick.com’s post and the rest is history.
The BoomCase is currently Hand-Made in Sacramento, California. We are opening a new shop in Oakland, CA in late 2013. The BoomCase is sold in select retailers in the USA, the UK, France, Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands,Hong-Kong and South Korea. To see a continually updated list visit here – Retail Locations

I picked up some great-looking 60’s vintage Allied cabinets a while back with nice 15″ woofers, a damaged crossover and two bad Jensen Sonodome tweeters. Wanted to get them working again, but didn’t want to drop a lot of cash on components, so the project kept getting pushed aside. Well, sometimes the Universe gives you a gift. The other day, I found a pair of beat up little Jensens at a thrift store for two bucks. Didn’t know what they had in them, but for the price… Turns out these ugly cabs held a pair of pristine, fully-functioning Sonodomes and nearly identical crossovers to the Allieds. Didn’t take long to decide to sacrifice the two-dollar Jensens for the greater good. Was even able to use the 10″ Jensen woofers to restore some solid Pressage 2-ways that had also been collecting dust. Coming soon. Cheers, ~L

The JBL D44000 Paragon is an iconic, one-piece stereo loudspeaker introduced by JBL in 1957 and discontinued in 1983; its production run was the longest of any JBL speaker. At its launch, the Paragon was the most expensive domestic loudspeaker on the market. Designed by Arnold Wolf from a concept elaborated by Richard Ranger, it is almost nine feet long and requires over a hundred man hours of hand-finishing by a team of dedicated craftsmen. Resembling less a conventional loudspeaker than an elegant sideboard, it is a landmark product for the company that was sought after by the well-heeled and celebrities. With estimated total production of about 1,000 units, it is highly desired by collectors to this day.

According to designer Zilch (RIP), “eWave is a pre-engineered high-frequency ‘module’ for building 2-ways comprising an inexpensive compression driver, modern constant-directivity waveguide, and a crossover incorporating the requisite compensation. Mate it with any woofer and cabinet of your choice which will play competently through its 1.6 kHz crossover region. The builder is responsible for optimizing the lowpass filter for the specific combination they use; a generic one is suggested as a starting point, and many have found that to be adequate for constructing a successful project….”
Essentially, the eWave setup replaces the original crossover — and the old tweeters and midranges with a single, horn high-range driver — and brings high-end, modern sound to vintage cabinets with original woofers.
